Reflections on Glen Campbell concert

Glen Campbell in concert at PHPThe Country Music Awards broadcast this week was outstanding. What does this broadcast have to do with Pebble Hill Plantation you might ask? During the show, a tribute was played and sung to honor Glen Campbell, the musician who gave us a trip through America with such hits as "By the time I get to Phoenix," "Wichita Lineman," "Carolina in My Mind" and "Galveston."

Several years ago, Campbell played a concert at Pebble Hill. Staffers were recently talking about that concert and the many other concerts held at Pebble Hill over the years. Included with Glen Campbell, other headliners have been Dionne Warwick, Kingston Trio, Three Dog Night, Herman’s Hermits, The Animals, Percy Sledge, Brenda Lee, Fifth Dimension, Diamonds, Lettermen, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, Platters and The Drifters.

Glen Campbell was introduced to the concert crowd that night by riding to the stage in a Pebble Hill shooting wagon pulled by the dynamic duo of Duke and Prince, our two Belgian heavy horses. What a night it was. As I remember, a full moon came up over the stage just before the end of the concert.

Those concerts were made possible by all the folks who purchased tickets and the sponsors who gave generously to cover the expenses.

After Glen finished the Pebble Hill concert, he made a trip to the Visitors Center at Pebble Hill to “meet and greet” the sponsors. It was a magical 20 minutes for those in attendance. Mr. Campbell signed books, at least one guitar and a number of album covers. He spoke to everyone in the room and did not leave until all requests had been filled. To stand next to a living legend was an exciting experience.

Glen Campbell was diagnosed several years ago with alzheimers. From your fans at Pebble Hill, we say thank you once again for a fabulous concert; an evening of music that will not be soon forgotten. We pray for a cure for this disease! Of all the concerts played at Pebble Hill, yours was the best.
